One of our dearest friends decided to become a Jew!
In honor of John’s transition into the Jewish faith, his fiancé (and one of my besties for 20 years now!, Dara) threw him a decades themed Bar Mitzvah party.
Adam and I chose:
If you were a child growing up in the 90s, you were likely obsessed with the following:
Food trends from the 90s:
Gushers were a food group.
You didn’t go anywhere without your bubble tape.
We begged our parents to get Kid Cuisine for Saturday night dinner when the babysitter watched us.
You and your friends would see who can suck Warheads the longest before spitting it out.
Dunkaroos were the best.
Fashion trends from the 90s:
You wore anything tie dye and had EVERY color egee socks
You wore a cheesy windbreaker
You had every color scrunchie.
Butterfly clips were essential.
Toys/games from the 90s:
Tamagotchi’s taught you how to care for something else. It was exciting when you got to change your tamagotchi’s diaper.
You were nothing without POGS to trade with your friends.
Your beanie baby collection took over your bed.
Your Easy Bake oven creations never looked like the pictures on the box and your parents pretended to like it when you made them eat your masterpiece.
Trolls stared at you while you slept.
You couldn’t wait to play Pretty Pretty Princess with your friends and wear the clip-on earrings.
Furby’s were amazing and creepy at the same time.
The markers in your set always dried out after the first use.
Movies from the 90s:
You probably watched the following movies…
Wayne’s World – party time, PARTY TIME, excellent!
The Sandlot – you put the ‘mallow on the graham
Hocus Pocus – How could we forget the Sanderson sisters?!
AMUCK AMUCK AMUCK!!!
Coneheads – because, duh, it’s amazing.
Romie and Michelle’s High School Reunion – who else wanted to make your own clothes like they did and dress like them? – They totally invented Post-its.
And Empire Records was like a religion.
Shock me, shock me, shock me 😉
CLUELESS!!!! As if!
The Addam’s Family played on repeat all October long.
Home Alone made it seem like a good idea to hide from your parents before leaving for a family trip.
BUZZ, your girlfriend, WOOF!
TV Shows from the 90s:
90210 -THE ORIGINAL
We swooned over Dylan and Brandon. And wanted to be Brenda or Kelly.
We couldn’t wait to get home to watch Saved by the Bell
Saturday nights looked like this…
NICKELODEON WAS EVERYTHING
You wanted to be friends with the characters on Dinosaurs. “Not the mama”
Music from the 90s:
If you were a teenage girl, you and your friends designated who was who from the group.
I was Ginger spice.
TLC was the jammmmm
You belted out this song in the shower and re-enacted a make believe break up scene
It was hard to decide who you loved more:
Backstreet Boys OR N’SYNC
BRITNEY VS. CHRISTINA
and you rocked out to Nirvana’s Teen Spirit
For all of these reasons above, and so many more, is why we chose to dress up from the 90s era!
We went with grungy, flannel 90s.
With butterfly clips and a choker that I had kept from the actual 90s. Which means they are 20 years old, HOLY SH*T!
Lipstick: Hipster by M.A.C.
And a present for the Bar Mitzvah boy!
A funny t-shirt with ‘Challah Back’ on it from Amazon.
Welcome to the tribe Johnny!
What decade is your favorite and why?!
